THE START OF
SOMETHING BIG
We’re South Lanarkshire’s largest employer and we know how important it is to offer young people a great start. Career Connections takes place annually in February and is a 2-day event which gives school leavers the chance to decide what to do next and meet employers, colleges and other training providers. At Careers Connections school leavers can also find out about our own training programmes and pick up an application pack.
Want to find out what working for us is really like? Why not join us on work experience? It’s a great way to gain new skills and could be the start of a great career. Check out the options below.
In 2006, over 400 4th year students joined us on work experience placements over a wide range of posts. The scheme lets you find out just how varied roles with us can be – and gives a taste of what it’s like to work for a visionary and vibrant organisation
There are some great opportunities for school leavers to become trainees or join one of the Council’s many training programmes. All lead to formal qualifications in a wide range of areas such as business administration, building trades, social care, early years, road worker, grounds maintenance and finance.
A large number of the Council’s jobs are administration based and this is a huge career opportunity. Many of our employees started as trainees and have developed their careers in administration and also moved to other areas like Accounts and Personnel. Many have quickly moved into supervisory and managerial roles earning in excess of 15k per year.
We advertise for trainees in February and October each year and we make sure they get plenty of experience and training in our forward thinking services like education and social work.
We employ a wide range of craft and construction people who build and maintain our housing and centres within the community. Every July we take on craft trainees who have the opportunity to become part of our dynamic workforce and train in trades ranging from heating engineering to joinery. We make sure they are educated to the highest standards in construction and are provided with every opportunity to develop in the future.
Our Early Years Trainees are all working towards a career helping children learn and grow. They provide an essential service to 6,000 children who attend our children’s centres and nurseries.
If you have 3 Highers (including English and Maths) you may be able to join us as a finance trainee. On this scheme you’ll receive formal training and development, working towards a formal qualification from CIPFA (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy).
Maintaining our extensive road network is a skilled and demanding job that’s vital to the community we serve. Our Road Work trainees work towards formal qualifications on the job.
Want to show the world you care? Every year about 10 school leavers join our Social Care team to work in residential and day care units. If you understand that people need people, a career in care could be for you.
With us, the opportunities are endless – are you ready for the challenge?
Your future starts here.
